Case Study: Trans-national career mobility for individuals

Country: Switzerland
Partner: Von Rohr & Associates

Situation
Our experience shows that 43% candidates make significant career or sector changes during a period of professional transition. Getting there can require a combination of emotional support, solid career advice, local market knowledge and determination.

Lisa approached Von Rohr & Associates for career guidance in August 2007 when she had just been asked to leave her position as Corporate Marketing Manager for an International NGO. One natural option was to find a similar position within an alternative International NGO in Geneva, however Lisa wanted to explore other options with the help and support of a consultancy.

Approach
As in all cases of transition, Lisa needed to go through a period of assessment before she could acknowledge what it was she wanted. She was therefore coached in the assessment not only of her past accomplishments and achievements but also of her aspirations and long term goals. With the support of her coach and acknowledgement of her future aims and ambitions it emerged that her new life and career objective was to move to the UK and set up her own business as an independent relocation specialist.

With this in mind she continued with her coach in Geneva with particular focus on the development of her business plan along with associated strategies for this new career venture. When her project was developed sufficiently Von Rohr & Associates contacted their Arbora partner Chiumento in London to identify as suitable coach for Lisa to continue her transition and help provide her with specific market knowledge. Knowing that this support was in place there for her, she made her decision to move to London.

Results
In November, she left Switzerland and moved to the UK to embark on her new life and career. The Chiumento team provided her with services necessary to develop her plan and make it a reality. She attended workshops on self-employment, personal branding and winning business with the web as well as tips on official paperwork and support for building a local customer base.

With the seamless partnership between the two Arbora organisations - Von Rohr & Associates and Chiumento - Lisa was able to fulfil her desire in running her own relocation business. The process in getting there had been a culmination of assessment, counselling, guidance, self awareness and motivation. The whole process took six months from the moment she left her job in Geneva to starting her new life in the UK.
