Case Study: Coaching for effective team leadership

Country: Spain
Company: Nokia
Provider: Atesora

Situation
Since January 2008, Nokia has introduced a new structure to the company that defines 3 business areas: devices, markets & services and software. They have also developed ‘The Nokia Way’ with a set of new values.

In addition to this the company wanted to encourage a new leadership style amongst its senior employees, calling it ‘The true Nokia leader.’ The new model of leadership incorporates four different values:

  • Developing the vision
  • Sharing goals
  • Gaining support
  • Delivering success

As a result Nokia hopes that out of these values will emerge three types of leader who will help manage the development of the company. These are: Team Leader, Business Leader and Strategic Leader.

Approach
To effectively introduce this new model of leadership into the company Atesora developed a programme with a new and innovative focus. This incorporated various personal development methods such as ontological coaching, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), systems theory and communications. The main objective was to emphasise Nokia’s new values and to implement a new way to lead in light of these.

In Spain Nokia has 100 employees, 13 of whom are ‘key managers’ with ‘True Nokia leader’ potential. In order to develop this new leadership style, the managers embarked on a learning path that combined team workshops and coaching sessions.

Results
The implementation of these new strategic models has led to some positive outcomes for Nokia and its individual employees. It has particularly helped provoke thinking about the relevance of leadership in achieving results as well as developing the tools to becoming a successful leader in uncertain times.

It has encouraged managers to achieve employee ‘engagement’, which contributes to the making of the ‘True Nokia Leader’ model. However, in addition to these changes, coaching also contributed to the personal development of the individual, resulting in visible improved self awareness, satisfaction and personal motivation. Most of all, the acknowledgment of the new ‘Nokia way’ has helped establish a common framework of communication and promotion of the freedom to lead.
